Case Study: In re Search of Info. Associated with @mac.com

In the era of digital information, writing a precise search warrant that is narrow enough to pass the constitutional requirement of specificity is not easy. In this case, the court smacks down government agents who were lazy and/or sloppy in failing to specify the information that they were seeking. In so doing, the court carefully balances the requirement that government be able to conduct proper criminal investigation against the danger of open warrants that allow the search and seizure of extremely broad swaths of digital information.
