The
first module covers the basics of patent law. We look at the forms of
intellectual property and where patents fit in its landscape. The first module
also covers the requirements for patentability, including inventorship, subject
matter eligibility, usefulness, novelty and non-obviousness.
In
module 2, we’ll turn to the procedural aspects of patents by covering patent
applications and the roles of patent attorneys, the patent bar and the United
States Patent and Trademark Office. We’ll also look at patent terms and various
aspects of patent maintenance.
Continuing
the procedural aspects of patent law, module 3 looks at proceedings before the
United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Patent Trial and appeal
Board. We’ll cover various types of patent proceedings and re-examination
actions.
Module
4 turns to patent ownership and enforcement. We’ll discuss the rights held by
patentees and the steps they should take to secure the full extent of their
patent rights. We’ll also look at various enforcement mechanisms, such as
licensing, cease and desist letters and patent litigation.
Finally,
module 5 covers patent infringement. We’ll look at what constitutes
infringement, patent infringement litigation and defenses to infringement
actions. We’ll then briefly look at remedies available in patent proceedings.
Upon
completion of this course, you should be familiar with our system of patent law
and the procedures by which patents are secured, held and enforced.
Best
of luck and we welcome your feedback!
